 Ski/Climb Box Creek Couloir

My wife and I left the Super 8 hotel in Leadville at 5:00am and drove our Ford F150 to the trail head. The 4x4 road is not really that bad, but you do have to cross a creek that is a bit rocky. Some clearance was needed for the snow ruts near the top. It was surpising how little snow was down low in tree line. We started skinning in at 5:30 right from the truck. Keep in mind there is very little parking at the trailhead.

Adventure on Elbert     2013-04-17 11:29:53
Sounds like an adventure. Bummer about the electricity. Glad you guys were ok.

Were you anchored into rock in Image 7?

Anchor setup     2013-04-18 17:37:24
I did not anchor in but set up a solid platform for a behind the back belay. I have found it amazingly easy to stop a falling skier. Experienced this when trying to ski a water fall. This was a 5 millimeter rope with an ice screw zipper cord on the end to prevent a static fall. We had on climbing harnesses, but sometimes we simply tie the rope around our waist. Hope this helps...always made things safer for me.
