 Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

Image
Campsite at Barafu Camp below summit

I am using a link to my trip report as the formatting has been a pain to transfer. This was a commercially guided trip up a popular route but will hopefully be of interest to those with a curiosity about Mount Kilimanjaro and helpful to those planning to climb it. We began our climb on December 27, 2012, summited on January 1, 2013 and finished on January 2, 2013. There are several other routes up Kilimanjaro and there are some easier and some harder than the route (Machame) described here. I did not find the climb particularly difficult, but everyone has a different experience. It was a fantastic climb. I'd be happy to provide advice or answer any question that folks have.

I imagine you got pretty tired of it. But it was a trip of a lifetime, I'm sure.

The rain was tough, but I'd rather have 5 days of rain then a clear summit day than the other way around. I was very grateful for that.

I did the Lemosho route last year. It was awesome, no rain. Did you stay in Moshi?

I've heard good things about Lemosho. We stayed in Arusha but passed through Moshi on the way back from Mweka Gate.

Congrats on your summit! Thanks for posting your trip report. My group & I did the Machame route last June. We had absolutely no rain, not even on the first or last days. It was interesting reading about your experience!

Thanks. I don't think anyone expected the kind of rain we ended up getting. You were lucky to have such good weather.

Which guide company did you use?

If you wouldn't mind sharing that info i would be grateful - I am looking to do this later in the year and any guidance would be appreciated. And congrats! Pretty cool you got all that infrastructure for a party of two!

I went with an outfit called Focus in Africa (www.focusinafrica.com). They were local, very reasonably priced and did an excellent job.
