After being turned back in my Tabeguache summit attempt three years ago, it was time to make amends. In 2009, I was about half across the ridge after summiting Shavano when a nasty electrical storm with high winds approached. I retreated, deciding to leave Tabeguache for another year and day. Fast forward to Wednesday, 9/5/2012, when we were to make our second attempt at getting Tabeguache. After Long's on Saturday, Holy Cross on Sunday/Monday and La Plata on Tuesday we were a bit leg weary but very intent on making it to the top of both.
In comparison to 2009, this was to be a perfect day, not a cloud in the sky the entire way. Joining me on what was to be their first trip up Shavano and Tabeguache, were Tim (Little Rock) and Mike (Colorado Springs). We got started around 7:00am, hit the summit of Shavano around 10:30am, Tabeguache by 11:30am and back to the trailhead by 4:00pm. Very straight forward climb with a bit of route finding and a lot of rocks/boulders on the traverse between the two mountains. We also saw alot of evidence of the downed trees which had blocked much of the trail earlier this year. The hard work put in by many to clear the trail was very evident.
We celebrated post climb with some Dale's Pale Ale at the trailhead followed by dinner at the Eddyline Restaurant in Buena Vista and then back to the Leadville Hostel.
Mike and Tim ready to hit the trail.
