 Cajun gets Sneffels

Add your trip report here...I'm from Sou.Louisiana and almost 57 years old.I've loved Mt.Sneffels since I first saw it in the late seventies.I have a sister and bro n law that live in Montrose so I try to visit them once a year to get some hiking in the San Juans, I love photograhphy and try to get some good shots of the area.I thought I would never be able to make it to the top of Sneffels because of my severe phobia of heights/exposure.My sister had told me about the "notch" and said there was no way I could do it.Over the last 3 years I've read all the trip reports from this site and looked at the pics and was pretty sure that I couldn't do it.But my bro n law wanted to do it and I said I would give it a try and I would just stop at the notch if I had to.Well the weather was perfect, we went to the upper trailhead at about 12,400 we had no trouble at all up to the notch.Bro n law went first and then I went for it.I have to say I was pretty scared and I wish I had planned on exactly where I would put my feet because to had good hand holds but my feet were kind of dangling for a little while. My bro n law said give me your hand and when I gave him one he yanked me through the notch.I figure thats probably not the way to do it.The rest of the way to the summit was an easy rock scramble. The views were awesome. On the way down we let 19 people come through the notck before us.My bro n law went through first and when I went through he guided me as to where to put my feet. That worked good and boy was I relieved to have gotten through the notch. There were a good many flowers in the basin between the upper and lower trailhead. All in all it was a great day and a big accomplishment for me.

Congrats on your summit of Sneffels Cajunclicker! Left the bayous 20 years ago for the mountains of Colorado, never met a cajun up top yet, but have seen a few names over the years. Used to live in a little town called Lafayette. I always said climbing the big oaks along the bayou was good training for the mountains!

You know I was too excited about the notch to look for the register when we got to the top so I didn't get to sign it if it was there.I also wish I would have taken a pic from the notch looking down into the drop off.Maybe next time!!
