Bierstadt with family (67 and 4 year olds); ran out of water

I had family visiting so my father, sister, and my 4 year old son set out to summit Bierstadt.

We made it to the top relatively uneventfully, then realized we had all run out of water. I'm an experienced hiker and know better. My Dad did the Pikes ascent marathon last year. We should have known better, obviously, and this was a big mistake.

By this time one of our party had become dehydrated, so we had to ask for water from other hikers. Our trek down was precarious and we had some minor injuries. We also met with lighting and hail. The down hike took 4 hours and we finished around 4:00.

Thanks to everyone who stopped and helped us. It was great to summit with my family and my son for the first time. We all made it back and are fine.

Congrats on getting your 4 year old son to the top, did he hike the whole way, or need help? Lesson learned, bring lots of water on the hikes- sometimes we make mistakes even when we should know better. Glad everyone made it down fine.

Thanks! I carried my 4 year old most of the way up in a backpack. Then he walked/ran most of the way down. He did great.
