Although he had climbed Mt. Evans from Summit Lake the day before, this was to be Kody's first true Fourteener hike/climb. Kody is only 8 but is full of energy and has had his sights set on Fourteeners for several years now, wanting to follow in his dad's footsteps.
Joining us were his sisters, Reilly (16) and Kylee (12), who had both done several Fourteeners and like Kody, love hiking/climbing the trails in Colorado. Also along were friends Bill & Kay from KS, Tim from AR and Caryn from TX.
We were at the trailhead shortly after 6:30 AM and there were some cars but still plenty of room to park. Road up to Kite Lake was a fairly easy drive. Just as we started the hike we ran into fellow 14er.com member "Bearclaw" and his 9 year old son, Bubba from Brighton, CO. They were great company for us all the way to the Democrat summit.
After Democrat we decided to push on to Cameron and Lincoln but had previously decided not to go on to Bross, understanding is private property but more importantly not wanting to have to navigate down the steep, scree slope. I had gone that way years ago and remembered it not being a real fun experience.
The hike to Lincoln was uneventful and everyone enjoyed the last bit of scramble up to the summit. What an unusual site to see someone with their mountain bike on top. Note sure of the route he had taken but it had to have been a challenge.
Kody did great the entire trip but did to experience a nice headache on the way down even getting a bit sick after gulping some Gatorade. We took it slow with lots of breaks and were back at the car just after noon.
What better way to spend the greater part of day than climbing a Fourteener in beautiful Colorado on a fabulous day with your kids and close friends!
