 Lincoln - Through Lincoln Ampitheatre

Was a great day, found the trailhead pretty easily from the directions provided in the route report about this climb. But, it was much, much more difficult than expected from the route report, which looks like it was done in 2004. The initial trail through the woods is NOT a good trail - it was difficult in a number of places to see if we were still on the trail. On the way back down, we had to slide over some rocks and look multiple directions just to see where the trail might be. We actually got lost but got lucky when we got to the end and was able to see where we parked, and walk over to where we should have been. We all noted on the way down the trail seemed more like an animal trail, getting down to the water, rather than a hiking trail.

The directions getting up were pretty good, but out of the 4.75 miles, I'm guessing 2 - 2.5 miles were spent scrambling over rock. The Ampitheatre was relatively flat but walking over sizeable rocks. Was hard to get in and out of the theatre, but was really cool.

Getting from the Ampitheatre to the mining roads was scrambling up a lot of loose rock, unless you want to walk a mile or 2 extra around it to pick up the easier trail. But, we went up the loose rock. Once onto the mining roads, it was really easy to get to the peak and a pretty easy ascent to the top. Great views.

Going down was of course tenuous going down the loose rock - few places where we slid on our bums going down. And not easy to pick up the trail to the bottom as I mentioned above. I was looking for an easy hike as I'd recently injured my knee - but this was a lot more difficult than I expected. I'd recommend this is for the hardier climbers that don't mind the intense amount of scrambling. My knees tell me this was about as hard as Shavano - 9 miles but a really nice trail all the way up; compared to 4.75 miles but really poor trail at the bottom, followed by lots of rock.

Glad we went up - but these 50 years olds really were challenged by this route.
