| Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, Bross loop
There has already been a trip report from this weekend on this loop, so I will be brief.
Breckenridge to getting on the trail – about an hour
Road conditions from Alma – rough but doable from any vehicle
Hit the trailhead at 6:15 (temp was 32 degrees), Democrat’s summit at 8, Cameron’s summit at 9:50, Lincoln’s summit at 1030, trail junction on west side of Bross at 1130, and back to the trailhead at 1pm.
Some snow up high on Democrat. Micro-spikes were nice on the last few hundred feet since the trail was icy and snow-packed, but not necessary. Pretty bad wind near the top. There were people wearing just shorts, but we gotta say –brrr. Gloves, hat, and parka were enough for us.
Minimal snow on Cameron. There were quite a few people on the mountains but we were alone on each of the summits. Balancing a camera on rocks to take a summit picture wasn’t easy in 30+ mph winds.
I am not sure why, but we were just surprised at the looks of Lincoln, I thought it was going to be closer, but it is not as big as it looks. Really a cool mountain. Coming down off of this one and over to Bross, there were some really bad wind gusts. One took me 10-15 feet before I could stop. Good thing there wasn’t anything to fall off of. We buddy walked sometimes as two are always stronger than one!
It is hard to understand Bross. We still aren’t clear on what the story is. At the end of the saddle, there is a trail junction where a large sign saying the trail is closed and private property. We decided not to go on and took the regular loop to go back. There were no other signs. There was another trail junction where people go up 50 or 100 ft to a summit. I don’t know if that is the true summit or if that is illegal too. This has been going on since 2009?? Come on, what’s the deal. Our beautiful day didn’t end there as we headed right out for some awesome fishing. Die hards -just like the wind!
