 Trail clear now

After reading Hunters report from their hike on May 5th, we were thinking the worst-hoping for the best.

Wind gust of up to 25 mph were expected but we hoped that if we left early enough, we could still reach the summit without too much trouble.

Well, the good news was that it was beautiful at the beginning of the hike. We did see some Aspen trees down, but it was still it’s normal beauty

Then wow! There was a good distance that you will travel where the wind did so much damage!

Someone-I assume the Forest Service-had cut the trees that were across the path. They did an excellent job! It was so sad, to see all the trees down. Amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it before.

We made it about half way across from treeline to the saddle and turned around. The wind was gusts were increasing in strength, so we decided to come back another time.

Toward the saddle. Not much snow left

Trail is good and no problems with navigation-thanks to the hard work of the great folks that clear the way. It looked like there might be small patches of snow to cross, but did not think we would need anything besides our hikers.

Thanks for the update     2012-05-27 08:07:43
It sure was windy yesterday! Sorry to hear about the no-summit, but thanks for the report about the trail. This is one I want to do soon.

Very smoky too...     2012-05-27 10:14:14
We headed back home to Colorado Springs about 7 am. Sat and man, the smoke was aweful! We were worried that there was a fire along the front range, as bad as it looked.

Shavano is one of my favorites, so I will be back to summit soon.
