 Mt. Elbert - South Route

Our friend cut through a tree crossing the dirt road to the trail head the day before, so you can 4WD all the way to the south route TH now.

when we arrived there were a few cars already parked there. we hit the TH at 9 am.

The approach has lots of snow still in the trees but its hard packed and the trail is easy to follow. lots of muddy spots as well as the day got warmer.

once out of the tree line its mostly rocky and dry but there are plenty of patches of snow still. snowshoes coudl have helped but enough people have already post holed you can follow their tracks without post hiling yourself.

trail isnt easy to follow but its clear where to head, the only completly snowy section was at the summit.

you can slide on your butt down the snow patches to get down to the main trail again, but you get going really fast so be careful!
