 Isolated on Kelso Ridge

This is my first video trip report. Bare with me. No photos, just video. Hope it's not too long, 10 minutes is a good chunk of time but there was a lot of climbing I wanted to cover. Shot with the HERO camera, cat eye lens. Man, these things are cool!

A few stats:

-Party: Solo

-9.5 hours car to car, with a nice break on the summit and a few breaks in-between. Had to start from I-70/Bakerville - I tried to drive up but the snow is already too deep and soft.

-The weather was great, albeit windy at the most inconvenient of places. However, one could've heard a whisper on the summit.

-Avy danger can be avoided. Kelso mountain had a recent slide that looks like it came about 100 yards from the summer trail. It doesn't appear there is enough snow up there for a major slide at this time, to cover the summer TH on the approach.

-There is a suspect slope on the Gray's/Torrey's saddle, closer to Gray's. I had to climb half-way up Gray's to cross in the rock band. It was a convex wind loaded slope. Had a hollow sound underneath the feet. It was worth the extra vert to avoid.

-As for the route, one should be comfortable with class 4 and exposure - including climbing on rock/snow in crampons. Snowshoes needed for the approach past the summer trail head.

-A blessed day. Enjoy the video. If you want to watch full screen I think you can right click and watch it on youtube, to enlarge.

Looks like you had a great day out there! And, ANOTHER new pair of boots??!

Cool     2012-02-17 23:04:49
I've done Kelso in summer twice and it seems like it would be a dream to climb with snow and rock. Someday. I have to stop skiing all the time. Thanks for the vid.

Nice Job     2012-02-17 23:27:40
Looks like an awesome climb.. great video! And nice touch with the casting crowns and old school michael w. Adele wasn't bad either...

Different in a great way     2012-02-18 06:36:51
That was a cool trip report. Good job. Great work of the ridge too

Boots     2012-02-18 07:36:51
Yes Barry, I am tired of cold feet in the winter time. The spantiks have cured that problem. They are a little heavy at over 5lbs but it's a good trade off. Single boots just don't cut it for me in the winter.

-wdavis, I was going to throw some third day in there too but something about that Adele song just ”fit”

I'm glad the video wasn't boring.

Great job!     2012-02-18 11:33:56
Great job & video, James. Looks like you had near perfect conditions. Really liked the video format and music too.

Awesome!     2012-02-18 13:36:21
My friend and I climbed this route on January Second and there was much less snow. I remember some of those spots in the video. Great climb!

You make a bad ass video (except for the first song) when you remember your camera and go up my favorite route on a day when I can't go. ARGH!!! Sweet though makes me wanna go back there right now.

Thanks     2012-02-19 16:37:36
Ryan - as sick as this route is, you know I'll do it again! Have fun and stay safe on pico.

...and the 14teeny for best action video goes to this film. My hands are sweating and my heard was pumping, especially on that spot that seemed to take you a while to get by. Wow, I have wanted to do this route for years now, I will have to do it this summer. Thanks for sharing.
