No trail!     2011-09-28 21:04:55
I did Boreas a couple weeks ago with 2 friends and even knowing 13ers.com said the trail wouldn't last long, I figured there had to some kind of path with it being so easily accessible from Breckenridge. I figured wrong. I never did find a trail but that made it even more fun. I did spot a cairn way off to the north and went to it, but there were no other cairns or paths that I could see. I ended up just under point 12815 and followed the ridge to Boreas' peak. I descended a completely different way. It was really quite fun and we had the mountain all to ourselves the entire time!

Its good to know that we were not simply incompetent. It sounds as though you and I had the same experience and took the same route up. I never saw any cairns except on the lower ridge at the summit. Why they were there I don't know. I figured the same as you that there would be a well worn trail. But no so. I liked blazing our own route even though it was ”easy.”

We saw one other hiker all day. He was with his dog and climbing along the ridge well above us as we descended.

It really was a FUN hike. I want to try Bald Mountain next. Its a little longer and higher but looks really fun.

No trails = fun!     2011-09-29 11:14:51
Part of the fun of Boreas (and other 13ers) is that trails are few and far between. It can be fun to do Boreas from the east side - makes for a little tougher ascent. And you will like Bald Mtn. Be aware that the summit is at the far north end of the mountain which makes for a nice ridge run from Boreas pass.

No trails = fun! - Concur!     2011-09-29 11:54:24
Yep. As the TR states, this was a perfect hike. Its fun to do route finding (even if it is easy). That's one reason why I have recently turned my interests to more 13ers.

I saw that there is a ”double-summit” on Bald. But it looks like the saddle is relatively gentle with no (or very little) exposure. So the route just blasts straight up the SSE ridge then? I saw a couple possible ways to get to the top of Bald when I was on Boreas. It also seems like there may be a route directly to the summit from Boreas Pass road heading up North East.

Thanks for reading my blog!

Trail     2011-09-29 21:02:52
There's definitely a trail that goes north to the saddle of Boreas and Bald... but I sure couldn't find one on the west slopes of Boreas either! Thanks for the report. I need to get back for Boreas- I was weathered off this summer.

Trail, No Trail     2011-09-30 11:23:56
Yep I think that the consensus is no, or very faint, trail. I'll stick with No Trail.

Definitely give Boreas a go before the pass closes. Its really great. The weather this weekend looks as good as it did last weekend. Selkirk was really nice too and convenient.
