 Elbert

The Climb

My moms awesome friend came down from california to climb mt.eblert with us in part because she wanted to check out climb with jack, and partly because she wanted to check another highpoint off her list. She has done 38 counting Elbert yesterday and Denali was one she has done to .We left the Silverthorne La Quinta at 4:00 A.M. makes morning swim practice look late. We drove down to Leadville and then from there to the Mt.Elbert trailhead. we started the hike at 5:30 and used head lamps for the first half hour or so. As we approached the "Clearing" and saw the portion of elbert above tree line, It was very disheartening to me at least. We trekked on and when we reached tree line the view was less degrading. We were just walking and walking admiring the amazing views when I spotted a “Mountain goat”. I told Mom and her AWESOME friend what I saw and we took a few pictures of the “goat”. Then 5 minutes later we realized that the “goat” was actually a piece of white granite. So after that lovely find we continued up the mountain. About 400 feet below the false summit mom let me go ahead and she and her friend could go at a slower pace since she came up from California. I sped ahead and made it to the false summit. Then I realized that there was still about 350 feet left until the top. I summited at about 10:20 after 5 hours of climbing. Mom and her friend summtied at about 10:35.We could see storm clouds building on mt massive and high tailed it down. after we got below the false summit it started to sprinkle. Then about 400 ft. lower down the mountain it started hailing on us. Everyone above tree line was essentially running down the mountain. We stopped at tree line for a quick snack. The last two miles were brutal, they felt like they never would end. but when we finally go to the car Moms friend and I ran the last 50 ft to the trail head.We did it!!!!! Highest point in CO summited after a 10 hour day.
