Roach describes Huron as a “shy peak hidden in the heart of the Sawatch” with one of the best views. After having experienced this peak, I can’t disagree. After driving nearly 12 miles on a dirt road that seemed to keep getting rougher, you turn onto a 4WD road and continue for a couple or more miles on a rough road. It appeared to have rained the afternoon or the night before, making sections of the 4WD road muddy and slick. We came to a meadow after a little more than a mile and parked not realizing that the road continued for another 3/4 of a mile. So, we added to the hike a little. I'm not sure that we ever saw Huron Peak until we go above treeline.

After starting at or above treeline our last couple of trips (Torrey's, Gray's, Sherman), it was a pleasant hike to get above treeline. After that, the views took us in and didn't let go. The views of the Three Apostles were spectacular. The hike was relatively easy and Huron was one of the more scenic 14ers we've climbed. We made it to the summit before 10:30, but the clouds had built up by that point making for some amazing pictures. Luckily, we only heard a couple of rumbles of thunder on our way down and didn't see any precip.

Nice one     2011-08-29 15:48:36
Some crazy clouds up there on Saturday, weren't there? A few of us were over on the Apostles, and judging from the cloud formations on your summit photos, I took this photo of Huron from north Apostle right about when you were on the summit. Maybe if you squint you can see yourselves...

Thanks for the pics. I think I do see myself on top. Tiny green pixel . Looks like you guys had a fun climb. I think I had the better views, though . I definitely have got to attempt the apostles someday. That just looks like too much fun.
