 Bierstadt Guanella Pass

Beautiful ascent. Views were spectacular 360 degrees. Great views of Pikes Peak, Torreys and Grays, Longs Peak and Mt. Evans. We started from the Guanella Pass trailhead (coming up from Georgetown). Incidentally, we arrived at Georgetown at 7:25 am and were up the road before it was scheduled to close at 8 am. Some wait times, but we got to the trailhead by 8:05 am. We began our ascent at 8:15 am and reached the summit at 10:55 am. We stayed on top until 11:25 am and were back at the parking lot by 1:15 pm. There were a lot of climbers along the trail and on top (probably 20 on top when we reached the summit). We s aw three grouse nesting, so keep your eyes and ears open. One word of caution to new climbers. We saw about ten climbers on their way up around 12:30 pm. That is too late to start a hike above tree line in Colorado. And, as it would happen, there was a thunderhead that dropped in just as we reached the parking lot. A dangerous situation for those climbers still on the mountain.

Question     2011-08-19 17:19:43
I've been thinking of doing Bierstadt for some time. In the trail description (from Guanella Pass) on this site it says there is now a boardwalk over the willows swamp. Is that the case and does it cover the whole swampy area or do you still have to slog thru some mud etc? I just want to be prepared and have the right gear for the conditions. Thanks!!!

Yes, the boardwalk is in place and it sure makes the walk across the willows swamp a piece of cake.
