A beautiful day for a hike. Despite NOAA foreboding forecasts, no weather to be seen or felt. I had a rain/wind breaker on for all of about 5 minutes on Shavano Summit but never again. Not even on Tabeguache summit
Again, my Honda Civic had no problems with either County Road 250 or Forest Road 52. And there was no water on the trail or peaks. Very dry.
All in all about 50 people on the 2 peaks that day. Lots of good stories to be heard. One gentleman was celebrating his 60th birthday with his son and they were doing Shavano, Tabeguache, Antero. Another couple was getting on a mountain again for the first time in a couple years after both experiencing spinal chord injuries. So inspiration all around.
I found it much easier to do the initial Shavano ascent then expected. But I also found the same trail descending to be much harder than anticipated!
The views from Tabeguache were gorgeous and the nice weather afforded me an hour to take in the sights. On the descent down Shavano a group of mountain goats provided some entertainment. I also saw some quail nesting in the forest so a good day for wildlife viewing.
By late afternoon the trail head was really heating up. I'm surprised how hot that area can get. The aspen in the meadow around the Colorado Trail are some of the largest I've seen. Amazing!
I'm starting to realize that the hikes in the Sawatch Range are incredibly beautiful. Up to this point Sneffels and La Plata have been my favorite hikes but I think this one may take the place of La Plata.
