 Four Mile Creek Trailhead

We have vacationed in Breck for the past 8 summers and a few into them we started climbing nearby 14ers. The drive to the trailhead from Breck took about an hour. The final 12 mile drive to the very end of the trailhead was very passable with cars making it to the very end. I admit I chickened out about a mile short because of a very short bumpy section......wish I had not as it was pretty good after that.

Started up about 8:30am with sunny clear skies. The trail was clear except for some snow for about 30 feet just below the saddleback but it was no big deal. Saddleback was pretty windy with our group of 8 all putting on jackets or long sleeved shirts. We have a wide range of climbers in the group. The most able would have made it up in about 2 hours. The slower ones took a bit over 3 hours (we are all Iowa flatlanders ranging in age of 17 to 54). Many on the trail thought they had reached the summit at the false summit until they saw the American Flag waving in the distance.

The summit was warm and there was no wind. Took pictures for another couple who were less than enthusiastic about the flag in the background.....they were from Australia. Had a few snacks and then headed back down. Again the range was 1 hour to 2 hours. At the saddleback some of us glissaded down about 80 feet(?) a bit north of where we hiked up on the snow. Fun and my shorts were just about dry when we got back to the vehicle.

Compared to others this was not our favorite climb.......A bit boring as you start above the tree line so it is all rocks, no meadows, etc........not like climbing Quandry for example. But what do you expect when you are starting at 12,000 feet so take it for what it is worth. We enjoy climbing all 14ers, this just wasn't one of our favorites.
