Mt. Buckskin Trip Report 08/03/2011

Buckskin Mt. Climb
Hikers: Aaron Voth (mennoguy) Matt Layman (mlayman09) Buckskin Mt. Elevation gain: ~1800 Mileage: 4 miles We started out at Kite Lake trailhead and took the Emma lake trail for a little ways then left the trail after about a half mile and went up the southeastern slope of Buckskin. The water is really flowing now, the road up to the lake is pretty washed out and Aaron my hiking partner wished he had had his goretex boots while crossing the meadow. The southeastern slope up to Buckskin is mostly solid talus and tundra. There are some slick scree parts but they can be avoided. We had incredible weather on this fine morning. Clouds were rolling constantly by us, giving us brief glimpses of Mt. Bross and Mt. Lincoln. We reached the ridgeline and traversed northwest to the summit. We couldn't see a thing unfortunately but the views on the way up were spectacular. It took us 50 minutes to summit. According to my GPS it was two miles exactly one way and we climbed about 1800'. Gerry Roach's rating system ranks Buckskin at 102 RP. This means we averaged 60 RP (we weren't pushing it), so we think that 102 RP is a little high for this peak. But that's just us.
