 Day 3 of 14er Palooza

Happy times on Huron

We slept in a little bit for day 3 of 14er Palooza and started from the 4wd trailhead at 6:30. Everybody went at their own pace for this hike and we had roundtrip times anywhere from 3 hours to 6-1/2 hours. Huron is a bit out of the way but it is well worth making the effort. Trail is great. Views are great. Relatively short hike. What's not to Like?

Getting prepared for another fun filled day on a 14er.

Our group. This is the last time we would be seen together until the end of the day.

Put your pole here and you'll be fine. I think. Trust me.

Excellent trail all the way.

Great views of the Three Apostles.

Blister repair service. Duct tape to the rescue.

Johnson catching a ride. Sadly, he still did not make the summit.

Waterfall on the way.

Thank you Captains Obvious for pointing out the destination.

Making good time?

Many switchbacks. It looked like escalators back and forth up the mountain. Sadly, I never found the moving sidewalk.

Difficult to beat the views offered on this hike.

Image
Unnecessarily exerting energy.

Image
One lingering snow field to cross. Not a problem.

Close to the top. Trail gets steeper in this area.

Had to keep an eye on the weather all day. Never turned nasty - just cold and a few spits of rain/hail.

Image
Taking a break - well deserved, I am sure.

Almost there.

We donned our 14er Palooza t-shirts made for the occasion.

Third of their first three 14er summits in three days. BOOM is correct. Even though the sign was "stolen", much to the owner's chagrin

Sisters enjoying the summit after the clouds/rain/hail cleared.

While on the summit we were treated to a rainbow below us.

Lots of 14er dogs on this peak. They always seem to have plenty of energy.

Image
Go ahead, set down your poles and pack. I won't chew on them. Promise.

Back at the trailhead.

4wd road back out. A little bumpy, but fairly easy.

Nice Report     2011-07-21 13:37:54
I'll be in the Sawatch next week and have been debating which peak to climb. Huron looks good.
