Mt. Sherman Trip Report 06/27/2011

Mt Sherman - SW Route
We did Mt Sherman on Saturday via the SW route from Fourmile Creek. The road was in pretty good shape overall, though the last hundred yards or so to the gate were snowcovered. The climb and the conditions were great. This was a second attempt for my son Tannis and I (we got snowed out last year). We were joined by buddies Chris and Mike. All four of us made the summit. At 11 years old, this was a fun challenge for my son and he did really well. I'm really proud of him for pushing through the hard part and accomplishing a goal. Conditions were good. We hit the trail about 8 and summited about noon (slow steady pace as he had trouble with the altitude). Chris and Mike were much faster. The snowfields were small and pretty solid going up. We didn't use traction devices but were glad to each have a pole. The weather couldn't have been better, though the wind along the top ridge was intense. Gaitors would have been really helpful on the ascent and descent if we weren't already wearing long pants. The steep ascent toward the ridge was very loose. After some success photos at the top and a bite to eat, we headed down. Tannis was highly motivated going down, as we'd watched some folks glissading and he couldn't wait to try it. Our first run was down the ridge face toward the mining buildings, with a second run just below that. We had a blast. There was a large group on the climb and lots of pairs. Most everyone seemed to make the summit. Watch the cornices, though the current route is not particularly near them. They'll clearly break loose soon. As Mountainmanny just posted in his trip report, it looks like Sherman is open for the season. I don't have much in the way of photos, though we may have some to add soon. My time to the top was 2:02, I took a more direct approach across a snow field and used my micro-spikes for that portion. The couple I attached myself to used ice-axes for assistance just to be safe. As the sun warmed things up it got slushy.

Mike joined me up top around the 2:45 mark, we hiked over to the low ridge on the S/E side of the peak then back up and down to find Damon/Tannis.

Glissading was a blast, I have some very poor iPhone videos I'll post up.

Thank you for writing up the report Damon! I had a great time and I was happy to hike down/back up to motivate Tannis, he did a great job.
