Spent a little time on the mountain...

Ascent to the lake via Como “Road” on 6/20
6/21 Summit day
Start Time: 5:15 am
Returned To camp: 10:30 am
Returned to car: 2:30 am
After a quick warm up on Humboldt a week ago, T money and I decided to head down to the Sierra Blanca’s. We planned to trek up to Lake Como, and camp for the night, and then summit Blanca and Ellingwood the next day.

We left Boulder around 10:30 am on Monday (6/20) and began the drive down south. When we got to the “Road” to Lake Como around three some clouds were brewing above the Blanca massif, but didn’t look too threatening so we headed up the road.
To avoid as much of the ten and a half mile walk up to Lake Como, we decided to see how far up that mess of a road we could get. Probably not the best idea considering I drive a non-modified 98 Jeep Cherokee Classic.

We only got about four miles up the road before we had to quit and walk.

We got a little hung up here but got past it eventually.

The slog up the road was long and tiring. I honestly can’t believe that any vehicles modified or not can make it up that road. When we got to the lake, we set up camp and relaxed. With the clouds rolling in, we were in for a cold night, but a beautiful sunset. Unfortunately I came down with a little bit of altitude sickness, and had to rest a bit in the tent. So I missed the sunset, but luckily T Money got a shot of it.

Beautiful

The next morning we got up at 5, and were on the trail by 5:15. It was a bit cold with a light breeze, but we had some pretty clear sky.

The route up Blanca once you get to the saddle was very fun to climb. I think at one point we left the trail and wound up on some low class-three terrain, which was very fun to climb.

Heres what we ended up climbing.

When we reached the summit, we got a break from the wind luckily, and the sun was a welcome change from the shade on the face.

The summit register was broken with nothing in it.

We stayed and enjoyed the view for a little bit, and then began our down climb. At this point we decided not to try Ellingwood because T was experiencing some knee pain. But we will be back…

This is how T was feelin about his knee

It was about 10:30 when we made it back to camp. We rested for a bit, and then packed up.
By 11:30 we began the painfully long hike back to the car. By about 2:30 we were back at the jeep.

Back at Lake Como

When we got back to the valley we were tired and in pain, but the trip was worth it.

Glad my jeep didn't fall apart after that mess

Next we headed home, but stopped in Westcliffe, CO for a Brute at Hunger Buster. Best Burgers in Colorado if you ask us…..

Overall the trip was very fun. We will be back for Ellingwood, and eventually Little Bear one day.

Nice photos and sounds like you had a tiring but rewarding time. The photos really help with current conditions. Good luck returning to get LB and Ellingwood
