Princeton East Face |
---|
Trailhead: Frontier Ranch Party: Joel Paula Elevation Gain: 3,800ft Route: Frontier Road I left Avon at 10:00pm and arrived at the frontier ranch around 11:30. We drove up the 4-wheel drive road to 10,300ft; about 500ft below the radio towers. I woke up at 3am and started hiking at 3:30. I followed the road to the first snow drift. The snow was pretty compacted so I just walked on it with tennis shoes. There was snow along the side of the road but it was not continuous enough to skin. At 11,500ft I descended down the valley towards the East face. When I made it to the base of the snow of the East face I decided to keep my trail shoes on. The snow was very low angle so I hiked up with my whippet. As the snow began to get steeper I ducked behind a rock on the side of the snow to transition. It was getting pretty warm so I wanted to get to the summit as fast as I could. I traveresed about 150 feet under the East ridge. The final few feet to the summit were very steep due to lots of snow this winter and because the aspect was East-facing. . I got to the summit at 8:30 am to the sound of two barking dogs. I talked to the solo man and took some pictures off of the summit. The line down the ridge. At nine am I began skiing down the East ridge to the top of the east face. The snow was very nice corn right off the summit. I reached the top of the East face and did 12 nice jump turns down it. As the slope mellowed out I got a little more speed and opened up my turns. At the very bottom of the snowfield when the terrain got flat I skied to skier's right to the rocks on the side of the snow field. I changed to trail shoes and shorts, and put my skis and ski boots back on my back. I hiked back up to the summer trail in about 30 mintues under clear skies and very warm weather. After that it was all down hill. I got to the 4 wheel drive road and headed back to my car. Got back to the car at 11 am. A very nice hike and ski. |
