 NW Ridge Alternate

Route: Little French Gulch/NW Ridge
Date: 6/11/2011
TH: French Gulch
Distance: 7.4 (RT)
Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft

We started at the French Gulch Trailhead at 7:30am. On our walk in we missed the turn off onto the old road/trail on our left and had to bushwack until we joined back with the road/trail. We walked for about 1.5 miles from the TH to a crossing at a creek in Little French Gulch. The hike in was snow free for the first mile. The next half mile there were snow drifts in the road, but you could get by without using snowshoes. Once you crossed the creek it was all snow. We followed the gulch all the way up the snowfield to about 500 ft from the top. Lucky for us the snow was firm under foot to the ridge. At the ridge we left our snowboard and skis. From here we followed the talus NW ridge to the summit.

By the time we got back to our snowboard and skis (about 12:00) the snow was nice and soft for the ride down. We were happy to be riding down as we would have been postholing otherwise. Even on a snowboard I was able to get all the way down to the creek crossing.

It was an awesome day in the mountains!
