Sunshine Mesa Trailhead

San Juan Mountains

Road Difficulty2 2  2WD, rough dirt, good clearance
Location9,750 feet
37.879482, -107.923968
Driving Directions
From CO 145, turn west on South Fork Road. This turn is 100 yards west of mile marker 71. Follow this road 2.2 miles, then turn right onto Sunshine Mesa Road. Continue straight up the increasingly rough road until arriving at the trailhead 7.7 miles from the turnoff at CO 145. Immediately before the trailhead, you will emerge into a large meadow with several old mining buildings. Bear left into a grove of trees where ample parking and several campsites exist.
 Notes
This trailhead provides access to the Bilk Basin approach to the Wilson Group. There are a few steep or rutted sections that may challenge passenger cars, especially when wet. Careful driving will allow most cars to pass safely.

Trailhead Status Updates

Most Recent Update 8/1/2026:

Currently, mud holes in the last mile could challenge Subaru types. The puddles aren't that deep but the mud is, had to hose it out of the shock mounts on my rear axle. Definitely would steer clear with highway tires or FWD.

Winter Access

South Fork Road accesses private property and San Miguel County buildings, so it is clear in winter. There do seem to be some homes on the lower Sunshine Mesa Road that may receive plow service, but it is unlikely that the upper road is clear in winter.
