Climbed Pikes Peak from the Crags on 5/11. My group had the mountain completely to ourselves - didn't see a soul all day. Parked just beyond the Mennonite camp. We used snowshoes TH to TH - I'd call them mandatory in the powdery fluff covering the mountain. On the way down, the trail below treeline had melted significantly during the day. Barring more snow, will likely be dry to treeline soon. Above treeline was all powder, and tons of it. The summit was extremely windy, with blowing snow being a major annoyance. We stayed on top maybe 5 minutes to painfully snap a few pics before retreating. See pics...

for posting, and good job!! Definitely a ton of new snow up there! I’ve been trying to plan my May trek up the mountain via Barr Trail, and when trying to gauge the conditions via the Summit House webcam, all I see is snow covering the webcam!! Your 4th picture explains why! Looks like the Summit House is pretty much buried.

We’re going to try it via the Barr Trail tomorrow. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes.

Summit from Barr trail

Any report from Barr trail ? I’m planning on mounting an attempt this coming Sunday, starting at ~ 9 am arriving at the summit in time to take an afternoon train down (assuming it’s running to the summit house by then). Your report has given me pause since I’ve never been above Barr camp during previous attempts. I do have trekking poles, and may consider renting snowshoes. Is the trail still perceptible beyond the treeline ?

Thanks for any info.

About Barr

We didn’t get a excellent look at Barr trail. I took a brief look down that way, but all I could see was completely buried in the wind swept drifts. So if you do go, you may have tracks to follow, but if there aren’t tracks, there’s no finding the actual trail. Not to mention the wind blows away tracks within hours. I’d plan on DEFINITELY having snowshoes, unless you enjoy postholing in the afternoon. And the train was not running on Monday, so be sure to triple check with them before relying on it.
