We went and tried to tackle Handies over the weekend. Still very snowy from about 12,500' up to the summit. Two of us ended up giving up around 13,000 feet as we did not have crampons or an ice ax. Another member of our party made it all the way to the summit, though. I estimate it will still be 2 more weeks before you will actually be able to take the trail the summit. Road to Silver Creek/Grizzly Gulch is in great condition. No problems at all.

Than sorry. I would bring spikes and an Axe. I have similar lack of winter experience and did not have the proper gear. My buddy had spikes and was able to make it to summit.

Thanks for the helpful report. I was planning to try Handies on the 26th. Even then, do you think I should take an axe and microspikes? Is there still avy risk now?
I am thinking about postponing the trip for a few weeks. I have no winter experience. I also wanted to hike Uncompahgre but the road at least now is impassible, according to a recent report.
