Great climb this morning, pre-dawn. Deep firm snow through the Willows, then intermittent hardpack to the summit. Crampons/microspikes may be useful high up, but some kind of floatation is definitely required down low. After sunrise the stuff softens fast and without snowshoes, the postholing is painful!

Thanks for your information! I am thinkging about doing Bierstadt tomorrow. Do you think snowshoes are needed during ascent?

if you're hiking before sunrise (say, before 6am), probably not ”needed”, but you'll certainly need them for the descent. Enjoy!
