I started at 3:15 AM. Even that early in the morning it was warm down low and I had some post-holing below treeline. Above tree-line in the willows the snow became more abundant with more post-holing. The gully was filled with solid snow so sticking to that I made better time and less post-holing. Looking at the Northwest Ridge from the basin I saw a lot of snow and the ridge looked to be corniced. I ascended the Main Couloir without much difficulty. However, the snow was not totally consolidated so I tried to stick to the rock ridge on the climbers left thinking the snow might be more stable near the rocks. I descended the C Couloir which had similar non-consolidated snow much like the Main Couloir. Return trip back down was uneventful except for more post-holing with the warmer conditions...

Hey man, too bad we didn't cross paths yesterday. I was wondering which couloir you ascended. The weather was great! I started at 4 am because I slept right through alarm. Made Belford and Oxford without incident. Postholing sucked a lot on way down.

Did you get a picture of Belford's west face and Oxford? Planning on skiing the trio next weekend and I was wondering if its possible to ski down to Elkhead pass.

Ya, I saw you guys driving up CR 390 as I was hiking up out of the parking lot! Crazy, I kept looking back down the gulch and over at Belford trying to spot you but I never saw you...

Snow @ Old Cabin?
5/22/2014 5:25am
Planning on making a summit bid via the NF Couloirs on Saturday. Curious to know how the snow was at the old cabin, that is at ~11,300 ft., before you enter Missouri Gulch. Contemplating hiking up to that point to camp, then launch from there on Sat morning. Thanks for any intel you may have.

Cabin

On Tuesday the 20th there was a few small dry spots but the old cabin still had approximately knee high drifts of snow. With the warm temps this week it MIGHT be clear of snow by Saturday. I hope that helps!

Actually Missouri which is north facing had a lot more snow and looked rideable on Tuesday. Oxford & Belford looked to be a lot more wind blown with less snow.
