Axe absolutely required. Glad for crampons. Brought snow shoes but never needed them. Only real snow on the route is on the last ~1000'. Expect steepish snow and some rock scrambling in crampons. Water easily available at 11.7K for filtering. Camping would be possible there, but not really worth humping overnight gear up that approach. Purgatory->Needleton trail is in great shape. 100% snow free with a few water crossings. In the google earth image, the right fork (ascent) was off route and a bit spicy with the current snow. I got suckered into what appeared to be a line leading right to the summit. The left fork (descent) was less obvious on the ascent, but much easier. The "summit" you can see as you approach the last 500' is a false summit. The true summit is back and left. One would probably know these things if they did some research in advance. :-S PM me or mrickers for a GPX of the N Pigeon Creek approach. It's a junkshow. |
