Named for the striking towers along its ridges, Castle holds the title of being the highest peak in the Elk Mountains. Climbing Castle's standard, Northeast Ridge route is a good introduction to climbing in the Elks but much easier than Pyramid Peak, The Maroon Bells, Snowmass Mountain, and Capitol Peak. Still, it has plenty of loose, challenging terrain. Many who climb Castle also add on Conundrum Peak by following the Castle and Conundrum Combination route.

Frequently Asked Questions about Castle Peak

Is Castle Peak a good introductory 14er for the Elk Mountains?

Yes, Castle Peak is widely considered the best introductory Elks 14er for hikers looking to transition into Colorado's notoriously loose and dangerous Elk Range. While neighbors like Capitol Peak and the Maroon Bells have high-consequence Class 3 and 4 climbing, Castle's standard Northeast Ridge route is a much more manageable Class 2 hike. It allows you to experience the spectacular, rugged scenery of the Elks without facing extreme vertical exposure.

Can I hike Castle Peak and Conundrum Peak together in the same day?

Yes, because they are connected by a straightforward ridge saddle, they are almost always climbed together as a "doubleheader" day trip. The standard method is to ascend Castle Peak first via its Northeast Ridge, drop down the rocky Class 2 ridge traverse to the Castle-Conundrum saddle, and make the short walk up to the summit of Conundrum Peak. This combination adds very little extra vertical climbing and allows you to bag two 14er summits in a single loop.

How rough is the Castle Creek 4WD road and where should I park?

Castle Creek Road (Forest Service Road 102) is a notoriously rough, rocky track that deteriorates rapidly the higher you drive. Standard 2WD passenger cars and low-clearance crossovers must park at the lower 2WD parking lot near the intersection of Montezuma Basin Road (around 9,800 feet). Driving past this point to reach the upper 4WD trailheads requires a high-clearance vehicle with low-range capabilities to clear deep ruts, large boulders, and steep switchbacks.

Do I need a permit to camp near Castle and Conundrum Peaks?

It depends on where you choose to set up your base camp. If you camp along the standard standard approach in Montezuma Basin or Castle Creek, overnight permits are not currently required and there are places to camp on the Castle Creek approach road. However, if you choose to approach or camp on the northern side of the peaks near the famous Conundrum Hot Springs zone, you are strictly required to secure a competitive wilderness permit in advance through the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Permit System.
