Mt. Adams etc. (7/22-23)

Postby Kiefer » Fri Jul 19, 2013 7:50 pm

I know the weather doesn't look so hot for the weekend in the Sangres.
Monday & Tuesday, it looks fairly decent.

The plan is to hike in EARLY on Monday and climb:
  • Point 13,546 (13,546')
  • Mt. Adams (13,931')
  • Point 13,153 (13,153')
  • Little Horn Peak (13,143')
  • Fluted Peak (13,554')
...then set camp on the plateau just north of Fluted.

Tuesday, climb:
  • Horn Peak (13,450')
  • Comanche Peak (13,277')
  • Spring Mountain (13,244')
...retrace steps and hike out via South Crestone Lake.

Long days spent mostly above treeline.
8 ranked 13ers and 4,615' of prominance :-D
Anyone interested?

The Adams-Fluted ridge is pretty fun.

Well, ok, seriously now.

Like doggler says, the Adams-Fluted ridge is class 4/5. so from the ordering of the peaks, I assume you plan to cross to fluted via the north crestone lake. Descending that fully from the Adams-13153 sale is supposedly a loose class 3, still not my idea of fun with overnight packs.

Then, that's at least 8000/5000 feet of vertical on day 1 - with packs, but only like 2000/5000 ferry on day 2. It isn't balanced! You could balance it maybe by just camping at n crestone lake and saving fluted for day 2.

Doing both horn ridges in both directions is pretty inefficient, but obviously unavoidable from the west.

But worst of all you skipped 13580. From a bagging perspective this makes no sense! 13541 and 13517 fit in a group and 13580 is best done along with Adams.

Hmm, I missed the retracing of steps part. that's like another 2000/2000 feet for day 2 but does balance the days. This would be easier as a 1-night overnight from north crestone trailhead with camp set up at the lake. The order of peaks could remain the same.
