That being said, whats the standard route to get up there? We parked at the willowbrook th and followed the mesa cortina trail for a bit before veering off towards the ridge up to east-east red peak. That picture has me kicking myself for turning around now...

I'm not sure what's considered the standard route, but Willowbrook TH is definitely an option. I've also heard of people approaching from the Buffalo Mountain TH, potentially using a car shuttle out of Willowbrook. We went in from Willowbrook (no shuttle), headed due south from the large open meadow around 10,500', and skinned up a set of north-facing chutes to EE Red's summit ridge. We were on the fence about climbing the couloir itself, but decided against it as we figured it'd take more time and there was a storm rolling in. After looking at the entire area on Google Earth, it seems as though a better ascent option from Willowbrook would be to head up the large avy path that drops northeast off the east end of EE Red's summit ridge (this route may be called "Little Red Riding Hood", but I'm not positive). Doing so would shave about a mile off the approach to the base of the couloir and looks to be mellow terrain. Of course you wouldn't be ale to climb what you ski in this scenario, but I'm not sure climbing Big Eyes is the best way to hit this one. It's so long and inset that I could see rockfall being a major problem depending on the time of year, and it just takes so long to get the base of the couloir you burn up a lot of time and energy just getting there.

Anyways, sorry to hear it didn't work out yesterday, but like I said, I think it'll be good for awhile. Cheers!

We didn't have a GPS with us unfortunately. We navigated using Brian's Trails Illustrated map of the area. Check out Google Earth though Bill. There are a few open meadows around 10,500' or a little higher that make for great landmarks and give you a good view of EE Red and the couloir itself, and on Google Earth you can also see the northeast facing avy path that I think would make for the best ascent route if you're OK with not climbing what you ski. Feel free to call or PM me if you want to discuss in further detail!

Climbed this cool little couloir above Minturn on Saturday. Bout 1,400' vert in all I believe with 3 technical pitches in the bottom half. 3 hrs roundtrip. Pretty much start climbing after crossing Highway 24 from the car. We dubbed it the Minturn Couloir for now :)

Upper Mount Wilson ( and all of the Wilson group) >12200 currenly has a layer of fresh snow over the dust layers, including Boxcar. Down lower, its patchy, and degrading quickly. South, west, and some east are already wet sliding.

I uploaded 3 photos from my trip that show some of the conditions.

Thanks in advance

From yesterday 04/27/13. Got home too late today to get a good pic but should be basically the same.

Best I can do from my house. Hope it helps.

edit: Actually Dreamweaver. Had previously identified as Flying Dutchman. Meeker reference threw me off. :-D
