I am also planning a trip this year and we are waivering between Willow Lakes (above Salmon) or Upper Slate. I will be climbing but most of my friends will be fishing so we are trying to find a good medium. Sounds and looks like Slate is fantastic, but does anyone have an opinion or suggestions for the Willow Lakes area?

Willow Lakes is very solid. If Upper Slate is a 10, Lower Slate is a 9 and Willow Lakes is a 8.5 (Salmon Lakes is a 8 - mainly due to the lack of obvious places to pitch a tent). The only thing to think about when doing Willow Lakes is the fact that parking at Willowbrook is illegal. 2 ways to avoid this reality is to park a car at the neighborhood turnoff from Route 9 and bike up OR start from Mesa Cortina - which is 3 extra, albeit easy miles each way.

Well it sounds like it's settled. 10 beats an 8.5 everyday (unless she's got a good personality). Probably just have to go to both this summer to decide. Thanks for the write up Helmut.
