Great Divide KML/KZM

Post by tlongpine »

I'm searching for a KML or KZM file of the Great Divide. I've searched around the internet, but most of the search results are actually the Continental Divide Trail, which only approximates the actual divide. Does anyone have this file, or know where I can download it?
I am unable to walk away from the mountain without climbing it. An unclimbed mountain tugs at my consciousness with the eternal weight of time itself. Until I've pressed my face into it's alpine winds, hugged it's ancient granite walls, and put it's weathered summit beneath my heal I'm unable to resist it's attraction.Knowing nature gives the mountain more time than she gives us adds urgency to the obsession. As has been said before; the mountain doesn't care.

It can wait forever. I cannot.

Are you talking about the GDT in Canada?

*edit*: Oh you're talking about the MTB route/race.

I am not searching for trail coordinates. I am searching for a file tracing the actual location of the the hydrological divide known as the Great Divide, aka the Continental Divide (of the Americas).

From Wikipedia, the Great Divide or The Great Divide may refer to:

Partition of British India
Continental Divide of the Americas
or more generally, any major hydrological divide or topographical divide
Great Divide Basin, an endorheic drainage basin in south central Wyoming, United States
Great Dividing Range, a mountain range that runs north to south down Australia's east coast

Here is a shapefile for the US

http://nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html#condivl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This page has a KMZ file of all the major watersheds in North America. You could make a new KML of the Continental Divide for North America by cutting and splicing the KML lines.

Forgive me for my ignorance when it comes to KML or KZM files, & I'm not sure if this could be what you are looking for, but I created a "path" of the continental divide for Google Earth:

http://en.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/spatialAr ... ent=search

It definitely took a long time to create! ](*,)

I broke it up into 2 halves, 'cuz the "trail" broke up @ the Continental Divide Basin in WY & came back together @ the other end of the Basin. I don't know if I did the right thing by making the entire divide as a pair of trails that were well over 1,000 mi in length, of if I should have made them as a series of paths that were only 1 mile long. I would say that its fairly accurate, since I used the USGS topo layer on Google Earth to create my waypoints.
"Is there any need to offer proof that this odious perversion of the law [socialism] is a perpetual source of hatred and discord; that it tends to destroy society itself? If such proof is needed, look at the United States [in 1850]. There is no country in the world where the law is kept more within its proper domain: the protection of every person's liberty and property. As a consequence of this, there appears to be no country in the world where the social order rests on a firmer foundation."

I've been wanting a file of the Divide for a while as well. Downloaded the shapefile from the National Atlas, unzipped it, assigned correct projection info, and converted it to a KMZ. The joys of doing GIS for a living :)

Not sure if there's a place on this site where I could upload the file - if so, someone please direct me. Otherwise, if anyone would like the .SHP or the .KMZ shoot me a PM with your email address. I'll get it over to you sometime today.
