MLK hike - La Plata?

Postby michaelgrundy » Thu Jan 03, 2013 2:01 pm

My buddy and I are looking to get a hike in on MLK weekend, most likely the 19th. We were thinking about doing La Plata but are flexible. Anyone want to meet up and do a winter 14er?

I may be interested in a Saturday, the 19th, hike. Depends on the weather and how my Friday at Sherman goes. Put me down as a definite maybe.

7-7:30 standardish winter route? I've seen climb times anywhere from 7-12 hours in winter.

I could be down for this depending on weather and avy conditions of course.

I'd say longer, though Sawatch snowpack is below normal which might make things faster than usual. 13 hours 40 minutes was my time, though others are certainly faster. 7 hours would be super quick. Personally, I'd plan on a 12 hour minimum. If you beat that time, great, but I wouldn't plan on it.
I'm slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

What exactly is your schedule? What time do you plan on being at the trailhead; are you staying overnight, etc. etc.

I think we will probably do the standard route and I am thinking a 6 AM start time is what we are going to aim for. Hopefully the weather and avy conditions are going to be cooperative for that weekend. Obviously, if the risk is too high, I wont be interested.
