The guy who keeps records for RMBL in Gothic just outside Crested Butte said it was the driest Sept/Oct/Nov in the 40 or so years he's been keeping records.

If it stays this dry, find a lake and skate on it to get some exercise. Pretty fun, I gotta say.

PS- I skied Jones Pass on thanksgiving and actually thought it was decent.

Nice pic and glad to see you are getting more practical in your old age bud. The last I checked you weren't skiing peaks with a sled approach. Is this a step to the dark side? :-D

There is only one more peak I'm set on skiing without a sled. Mostly because I didn't have a sled for all the other 14ers. After that, I'm implementing a plan to become better friends with everyone I know who owns a sled. Look out for that.

A similar comment by your wife, I think on Facebook, is what prompted me to go check it out again. Thanks. Also, you own a sled right? We should hang out more.

Dude, I am going to make a point to show up to your last 14er with my sleds fired up, just to tempt you. Perhaps even ride alongside of you while you skin. Seriously though, I admire what you have done. That is a whole lot of hard work.

Heck yeah. I'll be with roanmtnman, sledding on your final 14er approach :)

ajkagy, I don't know about blue mesa but I don't think people are skating it right now.

So how much did Shasta get?

I flew to L.A. a couple days ago, and the Sierras were covered with snow.

Here is a pic from the top of Jones pass (right where the road crosses the pass) on 12/1. We got about 500' vert of skiing.

Not sure yet. The problem is that there isn't a SNOTEL or other weather station up there, so perhaps we may never know for sure. But I suspect one of the guides or rangers will head up in the next day or two out of curiosity. There was certainly more than a foot of rain in town which should put snow totals up high well into the triple digits.

For the western 1/3 of the state:

... Winter weather set to make an appearance this weekend...

A long awaited change to the large-scale weather pattern appears in
store this weekend that will bring colder temperatures to eastern
Utah and western Colorado... and a shot of snow to many locations as
well.

A cold storm system will drop out of the Gulf of Alaska on Friday
and swing across the northern rockies into the Dakotas on Saturday.
A trailing cold front will reach northeast Utah and northwest
Colorado Saturday... bringing measurable snowfall to the northern
mountains. Strong gusty westerly winds will also create areas of
blowing snow.

Accumulating snowfall will also spread across the central and
southern mountains Saturday night as a second disturbance drive
the cold front through our area. Many central and northern valleys
stand a good chance of seeing some snow fall as well... as snow
levels quickly drop to valley floors behind the front. The cold
northwesterly flow will keep some snow showers over the western
Colorado mountains on Sunday.

After the unseasonably mild temperatures of late... the weekend
storm will bring a sharp change to colder temperatures. High
temperatures on Sunday could be as much as 15 to 20 degrees colder
than on Friday. Low temperatures Sunday night are likely to be in
the teens and single digits across the entire area.

Snowfall this weekend is expected to favor the northern and central
mountains... especially on the northwest and north facing slopes.
Northerly flow Saturday night into Sunday... however... may also bring
increased snowfall as far south as the northwest San Juan Mountains.

Forecast confidence is beginning to increase in the bigger
picture... yet uncertainty continues with many important details such
as the storm/S eventual strength and track. Please monitor the
latest statements and forecasts through local media... the Grand
Junction National Weather Service web site at
www.Weather.Gov... and our facebook Page.

Looks like less than a foot for most of the mountains with high winds. I am not complaining but we need about 10 more of these events.
