I need a quickie...13er....

Post by IHikeLikeAGirl »

With summer conditions waning, my 2012 wish list taunting me, and only being available to do some short hikes during the week, I must ask....

What are some good, quickish, 13er peaks?

Ones that:

The TH is within 2-3 hours of Colorado Springs
Class 1 or 2, or with very short, solid, class 3
5-7 mi RT
Ranked or unranked (prefer ranked though, but will take anything)

Thanks!

Head up I70 to Herman's or Watrous Gulch - Pettingell, Woods, Bethel, Parnassus and Bard... all are ranked. 2 hours from the Springs.

Try the Indian Peaks.
There are some great climbs there...Mt. Toll, Paiute, Audabon, North and South Arapahoe.
All are accessed via Brainard Lake area

Fletcher from Blue Lakes, love this hike, the views are sweet.

Loveland to Buckskin from just below Kite Lake, good hike, not nearly as cool as Fletcher though.

Bethel is not a 13er.
Neither is Woods.
Try again.

Three more, Weston and Ptarmagin from Weston Pass. Mt. Hope could be a good one.

Squaretop
Bald A
Silverheels
Whale
You could do both Guyot from Georgia Pass and Boreas from Boreas Pass (3 mi r/t for each)

Looks like you've mined the Mosquitos and Tenmile already

Mt Hope
Bull Hill

Did I call them all 13ers? I just said all are ranked, and within 2 hours or so of CS...

Subtracting your checklist from what I've climbed leaves a short list. :) But none of these are very hard, and all are about 100-120 miles away.

Whale Peak, north of 285 from Hall Valley campground, 9 miles r/t, easy class 2.
Bald Mountain and Boreas Peak from Boreas Pass, accessible from the south from Como.
Gray Wolf Mtn and Mt Spalding from Guanella Pass. Also Square Top Mtn.
I haven't climbed it, but Lenawee Mtn from either the A-Basin parking lot or the back side from Montezuma (Peru Creek?) should work.

I was going to suggest the James Peak group, but see you've already been there.

+1 on the group from Herman/Watrous Gulch, a very cool place.

don't forget the Citadel. I had a blast climbing that badboy a few weeks ago. However, it might be a stretch to call it Class 3. My partner and I found ourselves in some awesome moves going up and down.
