High Park Fire--100% Contained

Postby ChrisRoberts » Sat Jun 30, 2012 6:35 pm

According to Inciweb, the fire is completely contained. 87428 acres, 259 houses torched.

I've made a map based on the fire perimeters of peaks that appear to have been burned: http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Content/maplist.php?lid=564

Thanks to all of the firefighters, policemen, volunteers, SAR guys etc who worked a tough 3 weeks to keep Larimer County safe.

Huge THANKS! for all involved in putting this out. The heat had to be horrendous while working on this. =D>

Brilliant move by the firefighters to set the back burn where they did and stop the run on the north side of the Poudre. Still a lot of heat in the fire area but this is great news!

The Poudre Canyon was reopened on Friday or Saturday, we drove up to the pass today. The fire damage was less than I expected. Despite the large number of homes burned in this fire, none along the river seemed damaged. Pretty amazing actually to see the burn line come right up to an stop at these houses due to an obvious concerted effort.

There are, however, going to be a whole lot of hillsides vulnerable to mud slides if a big rain comes through.
The mountains - whose summits reach or exceed arbitrary thresholds for elevation and prominence - are calling and I must go.

Props to Haundenburg and Lund for leading the charge. They exceeded the expected containment of 7/30. Fellow firefighters who went to high park said they never seen fire behavior like that.
Bad decisions make good stories.
