Herman Gulch conditions help

Post by dnye »

Does anyone know what Herman Gulch's condition is? How far up can you go without snow shoes? Or is it still winter? I am guessing it got some snow overnight/today, but will probably be melted out by next weekend?

Thanks!

I was there on 4/28 and while we were able to go a ways into the basin before we needed snowshoes, they became quite necessary later in the day. Too bad we left ours in the car...

How far would you consider "a ways"? Close to the lake?

I think we felt snowshoes would have been a good idea around 11,200 or 11,300 ish, maybe it was a little higher.

This was the weekend after a storm and the new snow on top of the old snow didn't let all the old snow freeze completely. Conditions may be quite different now, but I would think that snowshoes would be necessary in the afternoon, if not the morning, too. It is a popular place and the trail is fairly easy to follow, even with snow (usually).
