Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management

"A founding text of Victorian middle-class identity, Household Management is today one of the great unread classics. Written when its author was only 22, it offered highly authoritative advice on subjects as diverse as fashion, child-care, animal husbandry, poisons, and the management of servants. To the modern reader expecting stuffy moralizing and watery vegetables, Beeton's book is a revelation: it ranges widely across the foods of Europe and beyond, actively embracing new food stuffs and techniques, mixing domestic advice with discussions of science, religion, class, industrialism, and gender roles. Alternately fashionable and frugal, anxious and blusteringly self-confident, Household Management highlights the concerns of the ever-expanding Victorian middle class at a key moment in its history."

Just finished Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. I realize it's maybe not on every climber's winter reading list, but if you're a patient reader (it's about 550 pages), this classic crime story is amazing on many levels. The plot unfolds in six parts as a remarkable web of events and unlikely relationships sure to grip even reluctant readers. But where Dostoevsky really distinguishes himself is in his ability to reveal the inner psychology of a diverse cast of characters. It's not light reading, but definitely worth the effort! Plus talking about 19th century Russian literature is sure to enhance your taciturn image at the tavern.

"Into the Silence," by Wade Davis -- it's a brilliant, spell-binding, in-depth analysis of the British expeditions to Everest during the 1920s, filled with historical intrigue, psychological insights, and little-known mountaineering facts. I can't put it down and wish it would never end. It's an awesome book, and I highly recommend it.

And I thought all this time that you people did nothing but hike and climb mountains...

Seal Target Geronimo, by Chuck Pfarrer
Unlike Andrew Hamilton, I’m not always hiking. Sometimes I’m sleeping.

I just finished "The Abstract Wild" and loved it. Turner speaks on conservation much as I do - as largely failed in it's current arrangement and in drastic need of rethinking. He also has a very apparent passion for the subject matter, and is, as he would say, one of the unfortunately few nature writers who is a naturalist first and writer second, as opposed to the other way around.

I just started "The Spell of the Sensuous" by Abrams and "The Animal Manifesto" by Bekoff.

I read "The Tiger" a month ago and loved it for a change of pace.

I recently finished reading "The Ledge" by Jim Davidson & Kevin Vaughan, which has been mentioned in this thread. Survival story from Rainier, circa 1992.
I could relate to several parts of the story in different ways, so in that way it was interesting for sure.

Currently reading, "s**t My Dad Says" by Justin Halpern. If you're a twitter fan (which I am not), you're probably already familiar with it.
Laugh out loud reading!

I just started re-reading Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus Trilogy. I can't stop laughing! It's heady, disturbing, and hilarious.
