In Memoriam: Michael Lepold 8/2011

Post by frieda85219 »

Mike Lepold found his passion for hiking while on vacation in Germany. He took a casual hike up the Alps and found his passion. For the last 10 years Mike has been hiking the Colorado 14ers. He had hiked over 40 of the summits. Each one was a thrill. His goal was to hike all of them. On August 17, 2011, Mike did a solo hike to Challenger point. At the summit he called his wife to share in his excitement and accomplishment. On the descent, he fell 600 ft. We will never know exactly what happened, but we do know his love for these mountains. His family is grateful for the Search and Rescue team that was able to recover his body on the 20th. A special thank you to the hikers that help direct the searchers and for the kind words and video that was taken of his recovery. Mike was known for his love for his family. He was very proud of his 2 children and had found his soulmate in his wife. Mike was only 52 when he made his last climb. As you climb the summits take some thoughts of Mike with you so that he can finally reach the summit of all the 14ers. Mike is greatly missed by his family and friends.

I will be thinking of him on my Humboldt/Kit Carsen climbs this weekend.

So sad...may he be in peace.

I give you this one thought to keep:
I am with you still - I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone;
I am with you still - in each new dawn.

We'll have a moment for him on Pyramid and Maroon Peaks this weekend... He's not unlike me, or others.

Prayers and peace...

Time for the next great losing streak to begin.

I'll offer a prayer from the Summit of Snowmass, Mountain Gods willing, RIP Michael...
We did not think of the great open plains, the beautiful rolling hills, and winding streams... as "wild". Only to the white man was nature a "wilderness".

I will certainly carry some thoughts of him with me on my upcoming trip to the Crestones, may he rest in peace.
