Have you considered renting lenses? Prophotorental.com in Boulder offers fair prices with minimal deposit. I've rented a number of gold-band lenses from them over the past year and always had a good experience. The 105mm f2.8 macro is hands down my favorite Nikon lens so far. It's tack sharp and built like a tank. Hope to have one someday.

Camren in Denver is also pretty good. About $26 a day for lenses. Kimo, aren't you shooting macro now? The flowers above mine in your last post are surely pushing it, that DOF is insane!

That's fantastic, Jody. In an all too often ugly world it's encouraging to see the remarkable beauty that we seek is always within reach. I like the subtle cloud shadows and the remarkable depth - I feel like I'm moving through space. A great photo.

I'm using a 90mm Tamron macro lens. Its polycarbonate body keeps it light, compact, and very packable. At 14.3 oz. (per specs) it's a great lens for hiking. The Nikon 105mm macro is heavy at 28 oz. so I would not be quick to carry it on all mountain climbs. Here are some photos from a rented Nikon 105 macro lens. The three pics were taken handheld, no tripod, with a D90 body. The pics are unedited (no sharpening and uncropped). The Nikon is a remarkable lens.

Rely nice photos all. I like the one from Flattop mountain. Was the lighting just right for that or did you use a GND filter?

Kimo, my wife really likes you pictures and she also likes taking small upclose pics. Thinking an extension tube would do the trick but then we would have to upgrade to an IS body. (Olympus E-620 from E-410). Will post some of our lily pics from this past weekend tonight.

Keep shooting everyone. Great wildflower season.

#1 reminds me of how I often feel after a nice long weekend in the mountains. And the b&w columbine flows like a dancer.

Hey Steve, thanks, and I'm glad to hear she's enjoying the pics. I agree - it's been a good season so far. And it seems the IPW and RMNP are just getting started.

Instead of an extension tube, consider close-up lenses that screw onto the filter thread of your current E-410 lenses. I've done some research on the subject and I'm about to pull the trigger tonight on either a Tiffen close-up lens set or a Kenko tube set to use with my macro lens to get even closer. I'm not convinced one method is better than the other - there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Choosing might come down to a flip of the coin. But if you don't want to upgrade your body yet, a close-up lens set would be the easier option for you.
