Quandary on Monday Dec. 20th

Postby Rastaman566 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 8:57 am

I'm planning a trip to Quandary on the 20th and if anybody would like in, let me know. The route will be the standard east ridge approach. Also, I can provide carpool from Colorado Springs.

Definitely interested with skis as long as the forecast is decent. And I would have to take you up on that carpool.

Is there enough snow up there for skis already? In that case I might snowshoe up and bring my board for the descent.

When I was up there Thanksgiving weekend, there were people on skis below treeline. Above treeline, snow was hit-and-miss.

This is what Quandary's East ridge looked like 12-4-10. Pic is by (Derek), taken from Silverheels.

We have gotten snow between then and now and its snowing up there now too. I'm willing to give it a shot.

Sweet. +2 for the hike. None for the carpool I will be fresh of the east coast so I may be a little cold and O2 starved.

Awesome. I'll wait on that trip report and then send out PMs Sunday when weather is in check.

Thanks for the trip report, I appreciate it. I've sent out PM's to those interested. As I mentioned, since I work today, send me a text to my phone instead of PM. If anyone else is interested, hit me up.

10-14 inches in forecast overnight tonight, plus another 6-10" tomorrow.

This is on top of the pounding it's had recently.

Quandary is generally considered safe, but gosh, I'm sure even the east ridge has its limits. If you can do so from a phone, check the CAIC forecast in the morning.

Here's the info from today:

<<Avalanche Watch in Effect through 12/20/2010 7:00 AM
There is an avalanche watch in effect for the mountainous areas of Colorado through Monday morning. Many areas have received over a foot of snow in the last 24 hours. Snowfall will continue over the next two days with periods of heavy snow and strong winds. New snow and wind drifts will overload a weak snowpack creating dangerous avalanche conditions. Look for increasing danger on Sunday and areas of high avalanche danger developing early on Monday morning...>>

Update:
"7:16 AM by Brian Lazar: Avalanche watch in effect. If forecast snow arrives as expected, danger will rise to HIGH by tomorrow. "
