it doesnt have anything to do with the lack of customers, it is the expiration of the permits with the forest service that dictate how long a resort will stay open.
But if the resorts still had a lot of customers coming in April or May they would get a longer time on their permits. Loveland Basin is open into May and Arapahoe Basin is open until the first week of June. In the past Arapahoe Basin sometimes stayed open until after the Forth of July. But most areas don't ask for a longer permit because of the lack of customers.
