Davenport and Mahon ski Kit Carson

Postby Jim Davies » Fri Dec 15, 2006 10:41 am

Chris Davenport and Ted Mahon (tmahon on the forum) successfully skied the OB Couloir on Kit Carson this Wednesday. Davenport has 7 more peaks to go in his quest to ski them all in one calendar year (he started last January 22). http://www.skithe14ers.com/

Wow. I didn't even know that there was a lift up Kit Carson.

Congrats to Ted and Chris. I'm jealous.

Ted, during the approach, at what approx. elevation did you guys hit snow that allowed for a fairly continuous skin?

I heard it's an old faithful double-chair they call the BDAscension.

thanks bill- we were able to skin from around 11000, where the willow creek trail crosses from the north side of the valley, past the waterfall to the south side. it was 2 hours with the skis on our backs. ~11 hours car to car. jcwhite was up there last weekend and gave us the beta.

challenger looked skiable as well

Ya know, I wasn't going to bring it up, but Davenport's web page doesn't list Challenger. Is he going to do it also, or just the "54" list?

chris is following dawsons list of 54 skied peaks. lou skied challenger during an aborted kit carson attempt, and chris said he will as well but doesn't have it on his 'short list' of remaining peaks.

hope this doesn't kick off another debate about what 'counts'

Hey, guys. Just thought I'd share this. For those of us who read & peruse the free, "Rocky Mountain Sports" info. Mag. usually found at outdoor shops, there's an article I just ran across on Chris Davenport by Chris Anthony. It's in the December edition on page 30 detailing a little more about his skiing the 14ers project.

Here's the on-line link:

Chris & Ted's ski of KC finally snapped me out of my summer biking frenzy and I dug out my ski gear. We went up Sunday Dec 24th and repeated it (after the next storm came in). We were able to skin from the car. It took us 14 hours car to car, also we had to skin down the trail from Willow Lake because the new snow was too deep to walk but not deep enough to slow down for all the rocks.

Way to go get that one cjw. We were planning Kit for the 27th but were a little unsure of the snowpack after the first big storm so did Humboldt instead. Looks like you had excellent conditions, congrats!
