Hi All,

I've been lucky enough a few times to have climbed through the clouds and sit atop a summit looking down on what looked like a lake of cloud cover below me. I was wondering if some of you had any similar pictures that you'd like to share. I'm sure they'll be beautiful.

One of the most touching hikes I've ever done was Longs last fall, for reasons far more important than being above a cloudlayer. But the spectacular scenery didn't hurt. We were chased by rising fog and clouds from about Chasm Lake, and once we reached the Boulderfield we were above the layer for good. It was beautiful.
I was also above the clouds during my first hike of Mt. Bierstadt and a climb of Cristo Couloir. It's a really cool feeling.

"ABOVE THE CLOUDS" is the title of Anatoli's collection of Journals that was published posthumously.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has an interest in the mountains

That was where I got the idea for the title of this post. It was that book in particular (along with Into the Wild) that inspired me to start climbing solo.

Very true...I don't consider myself religious at all...however, when I'm atop a summit, I feel a close connection to the closest thing I could call god. When I get to the top of a summit, I fell overcome with joy, happiness and thankfulness to be alive and have the ability to enjoy life and all that it offers me. It reminds me to stop wishing my life away; eg- while at work hoping that 5pm will come faster.

From a recent climb of Cottonwood Peak A in Sangres. Cloud layer in Wet Mountain Valley, none in San Luis Valley w/ the Sangres acting as a Cloud Dam. We were renting a cabin in Westcliffe and my wife was thinking that I would be totally "socked in" with clouds and not be able to see anything on my hike. Little did she know that I was "above the clouds".

Great pictures! Are there specific weather requirements for there to be this low layer of clouds? There seem to be a lot of these pictures around the Pac NW and the equator so I'm guessing a lot of moisture in the air plays a part. Can any weather people help out?

Very cool pics Kiefer! Speaking of clouds, remember our Sangre outing this winter, I'd say we were definitely ridin the clouds on that one...

This weekend as I was descending Pawnee Pass, ran down the valley into a huge fog bank. Felt like I was in a jungle world with the awesome waterfalls and fog everywhere. Wish I had the camera!!
