Elks/Crested Butte Conditions

Post by highplaces »

I’m looking to hike in the Elks from CB this weekend. Possibilities include Belleview Mtn, Precarious Pk, White Benchmark/White Rock, Teocalli Mtn and Ruby/Owen. Forecast looks like several inches today and tonight followed by dry and sun through the weekend. I’m looking to get info from anyone in the area as to what they are seeing with snow cover. Trying to figure out if it'll be decent hike conditions, or that nightmare of PIA early season just enough snow to hide every ankle turning rock type conditions. Thanks.

Been snowing/raining/sleeting/hailing the last couple days here, but supposed to get sunny starting tomorrow. It's been sticking above ~11k. Took this picture yesterday morning from my porch.

Hope that helps! I'll try to get pictures of the peaks you mentioned
"And this might get me in trouble, but ski mountaineering. I don't know why. You all seem like great people, and I'm sure it's just envy on my part. But there's just something annoying about planning a climb, getting in shape, and all the buildup that goes into dragging myself up a couloir to finally reach the top, and then getting on here and seeing somebody basically say, "Now watch me ski this with nary a mention of how I even got up here." You all make me sick "

It won't take too much sun to melt the snow off the sunnier aspects. You'll be fine if the route you pick is sunny. Best bet will be Teocalli- it gets less snow than the others you mentioned and the route is south facing. My $.02

Thanks everyone. I'm optimistic, there's a lot of sun in the forecast between now and the weekend.

Lots of snow. On Sopris today there was almost 3 feet in a lot of places. On the summit it ranged from a foot to 3 feet. I think the stuff up high is here for the season.

Hiked Belleview Mtn from the East Fork TH on Sunday. From TH to around the junction with Frigid Air Pass trail, the trail was frozen mud in the morning and unfrozen mud in the afternoon. Above that, there was a little snow with some ice on the trail. Up at West Maroon Pass and above, the snow was deeper (around a foot). Along the ridge from 13,210 to Belleview there were drifts around 2 feet. Winter boots and gaitors were the right choice. Microspikes from just below the pass to Belleview summit and back to pass.

Hiked Teocalli today and gb’s prediction was right on. No snow until the talus on top (intermittent snow fields) and solid snow along the ridge. I got away with trail runners on this one.
