A "13er" in Switzerland

Post by Timmy »

Just wanted to share a photo I took of a "13er", as 14ers.com users would classify, that I took yesterday. In the Alps, they do not classify mountains by their height as we seem to do in the US.

Anyway, here's the Eiger (not mount Eiger or Eiger peak, just Eiger)

Yep, that's the North Wall. =D>

I'm at about 3,000 - 4,000 feet (drinking an Erdinger Weissbrau) when I took this photo. It was cloudy all morning (yes, I'm drinking in the morning) when suddenly the clouds broke. I about spewed wheat beer all over my lederhosen when I looked up (literally) and got a glimpse of the great Eiger.

Timmy, you were so close and you didn't climb it? Heck, doesn't even look technical at all. You could have probably pulled that off in your vacation sandals.

Seriously though, I can see why that route wasn't conquered until 1938. Looks damned vicious.

His time was 2 hours, 47 minutes and 33 seconds! I couldn't do Sherman in that time.

First time I had seen the video but I heard of the speed record. He also has the speed record of the descent as well (no, he didn't fall). 4 hours as I understand.

The North Face Trail runs along right under the Nordwand and is a beautiful, relaxing hike. Start at Mannlichen and end at Alpglen...just a wonderful day. I've done it twice and am looking forward to hiking it again next year. Also the Panoramaweg from Schynige Platte to First is amazing...takes you parallel to Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch so you can look across the valley at them the whole 15 kilometers.

Enjoy Switzerland. It's my favorite place in the world.
