"Flour Power Couloir" on Otis Peak

Post by Andy »

I was wondering if anybody knows if the prominent couloir on Otis Peak's south face that tops out just east of the summit has a name and/or any documented ascents.

I'm not aware of a description of it in any guide books or anything like that, which is a little surprising as it is a beautiful line - similar in difficulty to Dragon's Tail but more aesthetic IMHO. I suppose that one reason that it hasn't gained the same popularity as some of its neighbors is that the window of opportunity to climb it as a straightforward snow climb is relatively short.

If nobody is aware of an existing name, then my friends and I have dubbed it "Flour Power Couloir". I give it three thumbs up and endorse its addition to your wishlist - think Dragon's Tail Couloir but better.

Here's a link to a video and some photos: http://andyintherockies.com/trip/112/Ot ... ouloir.htm.

I heard back from Eli Helmut - he's not aware of a name, nor any documented ascents.

Sweet looking climb! Thanks for posting.
Since I haven't climbed in the Park before  , I'll put this one on my list along with Dragon's Tail and many others!

That's crazy! One of these days you're gonna half to make the trek up here!

I know. But I plan to this spring/summer!
To climb something...or anything!

Off topic, I've been wondering if you ever went back to finish the Cloud Range?
(I saw a TR or a page of yours on SP about it.)
Although I'm not sure if they're part of the park or not.
Baker Mountain to the south of those are on my "to climb list."

Naw - just that one time. I suppose it would be nice to finish the last couple on the south end of that long north-south ridge but it's not very high on my to-do list.

"Flour Power" saw another ascent this past weekend. Conditions aren't quite as good as when we did last year so the cruxes are a bit spicier. Scott wrote a nice TR and took a bunch of great photos: http://www.scottborger.com/gallery.php? ... flourpower

I just showed my father Glenn Porzak this, he is the first person to climb the 100 highest peaks in the Rocky Mountain National Park... He has climbed this route over 5 times dating back to the early 80's. One of his ascents was a winter solo climb. He also has done dozens of other obscure couloirs in this area and throughout the Park. PM me if you would like his contact info.
Happy climbing!
