I'm thinking about hiking this range, and taking 2 days to do it, so I can enjoy the scenery because from what I hear its amazing.

So a few questions:

1. I know the head of the trail is at the Mt. Royal Trail Head, starting here, how far is the trip, one way?
2. If I were to take a night and camp half way, is there a decent spot to camp up high around peak 4/5?
3. Is there a trail that decends from peak 10?
4. Is there a shuttle that goes from breck to Frisco for the return trip or has anyone had any luck hitchhiking this route?

1. Assuming you stop at Peak 10 and hike all the way to Breck, about 20 miles.

2. Peaks 4-7 are pretty flat. Plenty of places to bivy. Setting up a tent could be problematic (it's pretty rocky from what I remember).

3. Yes, a road actually. Drops all the way to the ski area base.

4. Yes. The Summit Stage runs between the two. I think it's even free.

PS: Peaks 1-3 could be interesting with a heavy pack. Lots of scrambling...

I want to do this but I am hesitant. I have read/heard/seen the climb of Peak 1 to Peak 3 is kinda sketchy. The weather up here the last two weeks produces clouds around 11:00 AM over the range. If it was to start up you are above treeline and how do you safely get off those three monsters? I don't think I have skill or experience yet to traverse Peak 1-3. I could easily do the last 7, just worried about the first 3!

In spots, much of the scrambling can be lessened by dropping off the ridge proper.

Chris...as always thanks for the pics. I look at it and want to do it but the those knife edges and notches are just look intimidating to me. Once you get passed Peak 4 then it turns into a slog but that first part just looks like I would be shiverin' and shakin'!

Is this a hike that could realistically be done one way (the 20 miles) in one (long) day?

took us 12 hours, we had to wait about 45 minutes on peak 9 for a parnter... long fun day. got sleeted on from peaks 7 thru 9.

I think it would be best done in one day, so you didn't have to carry all of that stuff up and down 10 (or 12) peaks.

i wouldn't stretch it into two days, unless you went from hoosier pass to peak 1... hmmm....

I was thinking the same thing... if it wasn't for that darn 5.7 manky loose stretch near Fletcher!!!
